ABOUT DEEP ROOTS MOVEMENT
Since the beginning of human existence, we have needed to be skilled and persistent movers to survive and thrive as a species.
For the majority of our existence, walking, running, squatting, climbing, lifting, carrying, throwing, crawling, and other dynamic, full body movement were part of a daily movement regimen.
A once movement-rich lifestyle has since become movement-deficient, dominated by chair/couch sitting, computer/phone typing, and restrictive shoe wearing. This dramatic shift in the frequency and limitations of our daily movement regimen, can be directly linked to many of the physical, mental, and emotional ailments of modern humans today.
DRM believes that we must reimagine how movement is incorporated into every aspect of lives, building a movement-centric culture that embraces and celebrates our rich movement-ancestry.
Movement can be useful beyond trying to reach some unrealistic standard of the human physique. We must decide what movement means to us and what its utility is in a modern context.
DRM is a space, a practice,
and a philosophy.
Deep Roots Movement’s studio is located in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland in the heart of the Patapsco River Valley, surrounded by natural landscape and access to hiking trails in every direction.
DRM’s studio practice utilizes a diverse array of methodologies ranging from traditional fitness-based exercises, natural movements, and exploratory play activities.
The practice explores complex movement patterns such as jumping, crawling, climbing, hanging, balancing, getting up off the ground, squatting, lifting, carrying, throwing (and more!) and the diversity in which they can be executed.
Just like anything complex, these movement patterns are also made up of more simple components, which are also explored and practiced.
A hallmark of the DRM practice is the use of play and cooperation to explore movement and connect to one another. Our bodies are designed to move and we are social animals. The combination of the two is a recipe for a movement practice that can be sustained and enjoyed.
